JOANNE FINLAY
The Art Of Pen/Ink and Graphite.

I am grateful for the passion and desire to interpret the beautiful things in nature.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“I have a fascination (some say obsession!) with the detail in nature.  I am inspired by the tones and textures that naturally appear when I take photographs in color and translate them with pen/ink into black and white. Black and white forces me to see things without the influence of color”.

BIOGRAPHY – JOANNE FINLAY

Joanne was born in Mission, British Columbia.  She is a self-taught artist who draws in pen/ink and graphite pencil and paints in oils.  Each week she participates in an Atelier with her mentor Lalita Hamill to continue to learn and keep her skills sharp.

Joanne moved back to the West Coast after being away for a number of years and is always in awe of the beauty that presents itself each time she embarks on her next artistic adventure.  She
started to see rock formations with a more curious eye, ocean beaches from an observer’s camera, and the natural abstracts formed by wind and water.  She is inspired by the Fraser Valley (where she and her husband make their home) which is always an open pallet with colors radiating from the blueberry fields, gladiola farms and the colorful farmland which changes with the seasons.  Her current work in oils is primarily impressionistic realism, especially in her paintings of the Gulf Islands, flowers and local landscapes.

She has completed a series of 14 pen/ink drawings which were donated to the Langley Hospice Society residence in 2023. They captured her love of nature and she called them her meditations.

Joanne received her Associate Signature Status with Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA) in March 2016 and is a Canadian Drawing Master (CDM) which she was granted in 2013.  She has works in collections locally, nationally and internationally.  If you are interested in inquiring about one of Joanne’s pieces please contact her at joannefinlayartist@gmail.com
